About Beach Plums

Beach plum (Prunus maritima) is a fruiting shrub native to coastal dunes of the Northeastern United States. Since colonial times, people have collected wild fruit to make preserves and jelly.1 It's actually a member of the rose family and related to another staple of Northest beaches, the "beach rose" (Rosa Rugosa). They grow wild all over Cape Cod and in the fall, many farm stands sell their own brand of jellies and jams. Many folks on the Cape also have recipes for making Beach Plum Brandy. The fruit is quite tart and not condusive to eating as you would a normal plum. They're rather small, too, as plums go, typically less than an inch in length although the sizes seem to vary quite a bit from season to season.

Beach Plums in Bloom

This photo was taken at a local farm -- Coonamessett Farm -- in Hatchville, MA. "Farmer Ron" has a fairly large group of plants that were specifically planted by the farm and seem to be doing well, although they'll grow just about anywhere and almost seem to prefer the harsher soils -- if you can call it that -- found in local sand dunes. The one in the photo above was literally covered in flowers. If it's any indication of this year's crop, there should be a lot of jelly, jam, and maybe even brandy for sale on the Cape later this year.
